Hello everyone
During the last semester, William Mulvihill, an exchange student from the National University of Madrid (ETSAM), came to our department as an exchange student.
William is currently working part-time at an architectural firm in New York, devoting himself to the architectural practice and also working as an aspiring professional photographer.
I got to know William during this 2023 spring design studio in third year. After he came to Korea, he contacted many architectural photographers in Korea. Some of them agreed to have him accompany them. William enjoyed accompanying these photographers to their weekend shoots to photograph the architects' work.
In fact, even before coming to Korea, William was interested in photography in Spain and New York. When he returns to New York and Madrid after completing his photography training and exchange program in the DOA at SKKU, he plans to photograph his works for Campo Baeza, an internationally recognized Spanish architect.
During the last semester, William traveled all over Korea. Not only that, but he also went to Taiwan and Vietnam. It's amazing how he travels to so many places and captures the architecture in his camera during the intense spring semester of third year.
Oftentimes, architects refer professional architectural photographers as people who chase the light. 20 minutes before the sunrise and 20 minutes after the sunset are their favorite times of day to capture the light in the camera. This is because the light is distributed evenly in the photo without disturbance of contrasting effect of light and shade. And it is because the natural light from the sky and the artificial light inside the building can be captured together in the photos.
William writes in the “Light of Korea” catalogue pg17,
“My photographs of the Alvaro Siza pavilions focused on their modern, minimalist design. I used framing and composition techniques to capture the pavilions’ clean lines and unique features, such as the perforated patterns in the roof of the “Shadow” pavilion and the curved glass walls of the “Light” pavilion.
Finally, my photographs of the park’s natural surroundings aimed to capture the architecture in context surrounding. I used different lighting conditions to create different moods, from the warm, golden light of sunrise to the cool, blue tones of sunset. I also experimented with different compositions, including panoramic shots and close-ups of flowers and trees.”
In this digital photograph exhibition by William for the community of DOA SKKU, contains Sayuwon, Mimesis, Songeun Art Space, and Miscellaneous. One of his photo was published in SKKU newspaper.
Please enjoy the photos of world-class modern architecture in Korea captured by William. The beauty of natural landscapes of Korea, the beauty of each Pritzker Recipients’ interpretation of Korea, and William’s search for their alignment.
Thank you William for preparing this digital exhibition.
